چکیده

The potential of estimating soil moisture from fully polarimetric satellite X-band SAR data is analysed for the first time. The Physical Optics model has been combined with an azimuthally rotation distribution, forming a socalled Extend-PO-model (X-PO), for the scattering process representation which includes a cross-polarized component. In addition, the eigen-based decomposition approach has been used to interpret the scattering mechanisms and to estimate the soil parameters. The developed inversion approach has been applied to data acquired by the German satellite TerraSAR-X over the Wallerfing region in April 2009. Simultaneously to the overpasses, soil moisture and vegetation measurements have been collected on agricultural fields. Finally the estimated soil moistures from the proposed algorithm have been compared with the measured soil moistures collected over bare soil fields resulting in a root mean square error of ~10Vol.%.

Polarimetric Soil Moisture Retrieval at Short Wavelength

Soil moisture was assessed with quad-polarimetric TerraSAR-X and dual-polarimetric (HH/VV) TanDEM-X data from the agricultural region of Wallerfing, Germany. The investigations included a bare soil case in April 2009 (TerraSAR-X) and a time series of 04-07/2011 (TanDEM-X) to estimate soil moisture on bare and vegetated soils including different agricultural crop types at various phenological st...

Modified Scattering Decomposition for Soil Moisture Estimation from Polarimetric X-band Data

In this paper, the potential of estimating soil moisture from fully polarimetric X-band SAR data is investigated for the first time. Due to the short wavelength, the Physical Optics model [1] has been chosen for the scattering process representation and a model-based decomposition approach has been used to exploit the polarimetric observable space. For appropriate modelling of the strong cross-...

Advancements in Estimating Crop Growth Stages Using Radarsat-2 and Terrasar-x Polarimetric Data

This paper uses RADARSAT-2 quad Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) and TerraSAR-X dual polarimetric SAR data to monitor agriculture crop growth stages. Two RADARSAT-2 Fine Quad Wide (FQW) beam modes FQ2W and FQ10W, each with 5 sets of data and 13 sets of Stripmap TerraSAR-X data were used in the study. Both RADARSAT-2 POLSAR data and TerraSARX data were acquired in summer 2012 outsi...

Non-local Means Filter for Polarimetric Sar Speckle Reduction -experiments Using Terrasar-x Data

The speckle is omnipresent in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images as an intrinsic characteristic. However, it is unwanted in certain applications. Therefore, intelligent filters for speckle reduction are of great importance. It has been demonstrated in several literatures that the non-local means filter can reduce noise while preserving details. This paper discusses non-local means filter for...

Investigation of Arctic Sea Ice Thickness using Space-borne Polarimetric SAR data

Space-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data have been widely used to produce ice concentration (type), ice motion, ice charting (operational route planning), and iceberg detection. Recent availability of polarimetric SAR sensors (e.g., TerraSAR-X, RADARSAT-2, and ALOS PALSAR) enables us to explore the full potential of polarimetric data to derive sea ice information. Among the many sea ice ...
